Timber Shaving Vessels

Delicate in appearance but robust in structure, the timber shaving vessels play on the idea of the ephemeral.

Inspired by Isamu Noguchi's Akari lamps and the papier-mâché process, timber shavings, the by-product of hand-planed timber, a material customarily discarded or used for fire kindling, are used here to produce vessels. Using wheat paste, consisting of water, flour and sugar as an adhesive, shavings are unfurled and applied strand-by-strand, layer-by-layer to glass bottles that act as moulds, giving the vessels their form.

Rather than a forced aesthetic, the timber shavings are allowed to maintain a somewhat natural appearance upon application. The layers, textures and, at times, the corkscrew appearance of each strip of timber speaks for themselves.
